Alameda gears up for Harper Lee’s anticipated book release

The much-anticipated — and somewhat controversial — publication of Harper Lee’s “new” novel, “Go Set a Watchman,” is slated for Tuesday and will be celebrated at American Oak restaurant and whiskey bar in Alameda and A Great Good Place for Books in Montclair Village.

Lee’s only other novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” garnered worldwide acclaim when it was published in 1960. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was subsequently made into a blockbuster movie starring Gregory Peck.

The “Books Down and Bottoms Up!” release party at American Oak, 2319 Santa Clara Ave., kicks off at 7 p.m. The Alameda Free Library is sponsoring the event, which will feature food for purchase and “literary cocktails” inspired by Tim Federle’s 2013 book, “Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist.”

“The bar will be making some of the cocktail recipes out of the book such as The Cooler Purple, The Sound and the Slurry and, of course, Tequila Mockingbird,” said Cosette Ratliss, the library’s supervising librarian for adult services. “It’s going to be a low-key, fun event where people can chat, drink cocktails and pick up a copy of the book.”
